Celebrating Brands That Matter
Hasan Fadlallah reflects on 20 years of Brand Lounge, the evolution of the consultancy over the years, and what it takes to build brands that matter.

A Letter on Twenty Years
Twenty years gives you enough distance to see patterns.
When Brand Lounge was founded, we built the business around a simple belief: brands need a meaningful point of differentiation. In crowded markets, every business has to understand what makes them different, why that difference matters, and how to build around it. That belief has shaped our work for two decades, and it still does.
But twenty years of working with businesses at very different stages of growth has also made one thing increasingly clear: difference alone is not enough.
A brand can be distinctive, yet have very little effect on the organization behind it. A compelling positioning needs to be clearly translated into culture, customer experience, innovation or growth.
So somewhere along the way, the question changed. Not simply:
What makes this brand different?
But instead:
Why should this brand matter?
That distinction has become increasingly important to us. A brand matters when it gives a business clarity about where it is going and what it should stand for. It matters when employees understand the role they play in delivering it. It matters when customers can feel the difference rather than simply read about it. It matters when it influences products, experiences, decisions and behaviors.
Most importantly, it matters when the impact of the work continues long after the strategy presentation has ended. That is the standard we are setting for ourselves as Brand Lounge enters its twentieth year, and one we intend to carry into the next twenty.
Building Brands That Matter
Brands That Matter is the clearest articulation we have found for what we believe brand-building should ultimately achieve. For many years, we spoke about maximizing value. That remains an important commercial outcome. Businesses invest in brand because they expect that investment to create value, stronger preference, clearer positioning, better culture, greater relevance, new opportunities and ultimately stronger performance. But value only follows when the brand has enough relevance, meaning and impact to matter.
That idea asks us to look beyond what a brand says and examine what it actually changes.
Does it change how the business behaves?
Does it give people something to believe in?
Does it create a stronger relationship with customers?
Does it open possibilities that did not exist before?
These are the questions that increasingly define the way we work. They are also why our own philosophy has continued to evolve.
Strategy has to begin with real insight rather than opinion. Culture has to turn purpose into behavior. Design has to create impact rather than decoration. Innovation has to take the brand into products, services and experiences that make the strategy tangible and ensure the business is ready for growth.
And the work cannot simply end once the identity is delivered. That thinking led us to complete our methodology with Maximize, alongside Discover, Uncover and Differentiate. Because the value of a brand is ultimately proven in what happens after it is created.
The strategy has to enter the organization. The identity has to live in the market. The purpose has to influence decisions. The culture has to be experienced by people. The brand has to mean something.
A Year of Asking What Matters
As we mark twenty years, we want to use the milestone for more than looking backwards.
Throughout the year ahead, Brands That Matter will become a broader platform for exploring the ideas, organizations, people and decisions shaping the future of brands.
We will use it to examine what creates lasting relevance, what businesses are learning as markets change, how culture and innovation influence brand value, and what separates brands that simply compete from those that create genuine consequence.
Some of that thinking will come from us. Much of it will come from the people we have had the privilege of working alongside - founders, leaders, clients, partners and others shaping organizations across different industries and markets.
Because after twenty years, one of the clearest lessons is that no meaningful brand is built in isolation - neither was Brand Lounge.
The company we are today is the result of clients who trusted us with important moments in their businesses, people who contributed years of their careers here, partners who challenged our thinking, and the many conversations, experiments, successes and mistakes that gradually shaped how we see our discipline.
Our twentieth year is therefore less about commemorating a number and more about asking what those twenty years have taught us - and what deserves to define the next twenty.
What Comes Next
Our ambition for Brand Lounge has grown. We remain deeply proud of being a homegrown consultancy, but we no longer see that as the boundary of the business.
We are building the capabilities, tools, knowledge and partnerships required to take our thinking further, across new markets, new disciplines and new ways of working with clients.
That includes becoming more rigorous in how we diagnose brands and measure opportunity. It includes sharing more of the knowledge we have built over two decades. It means staying closer to implementation so the work creates real impact rather than ending at recommendation. And it means continuing to question our own assumptions.
Our industry is changing quickly. Technology will transform parts of how brands are researched, built, designed and managed. New tools will make certain tasks faster and more accessible. That only makes judgment more important.
Brand decisions influence businesses far beyond communications. They affect culture, investment, innovation, customer expectations and long-term growth. The responsibility of people advising those businesses therefore becomes greater, not smaller.
Our ambition is to build something that creates value, earns relevance and leaves something meaningful behind. Something worth choosing, worth believing in, and most importantly something that matters.
That is what Brands That Matter means to us. And it is the question we intend to keep exploring throughout the year and well beyond it.
